Germany proposes new aviation tax

16th July, 2010

It is not just Britain that is considering new aviation taxes. In June, Germany proposed a tax on departures to raise 1 billion Euros pa.
The tax would be set at 13 euros for trips less than 2,500 kilometres away and 26 euros for longer trips.

The tax would be introduced in Jan 2011, but would be lowered in 2012 to offset costs of the European Emissions Trading System for CO2 (ETS).

There was a hysterical reaction from IATA (International Air Transport Association): “ .. a cash-grab by a cash-strapped government. .. Painting [the proposal] green adds insult to injury; there will be no environmental benefit from the economic damage caused.”
