Labour may abandon support for 3rd runway at Heathrow

22nd March, 2011

Reports are emerging that the Labour Party is close to ditching its long-standing support for a third runway at Heathrow. Shadow Transport Secretary Maria Eagle is quoted in today’s Times (c18th March) as saying: “Ed Miliband has always been clear that he is sceptical about a third runway at Heathrow. So I do not start our policy review with any preference.”

When pressed to say whether this meant Labour no longer held unequivocal support for a third runway, Ms Eagle added: “Not at this stage because we have got our policy review and as I have said practically speaking it is off the agenda for the length of this parliament.”

Perhaps the Labour Party has read the report from the New Economics Foundation! (This link is to an article written during the previous govvernment, but the content an report remain highly relevant.)
