50 reasons why Britain doesn’t need a new runway: AEF campaign launches

8th August, 2016

Prime Minister Theresa May is under intense pressure from the aviation industry to back a new runway at Heathrow or Gatwick with the decision expected to be made in September or October.

AEF has today launched a campaign aiming to highlight the challenges of expansion at either airport and shed light on the limits of the arguments used by the aviation industry. Our ’50 Reasons why Britain doesn’t need a new runway’ campaign aims to bring together the breadth of arguments against expansion at either Heathrow or Gatwick.

The campaign builds on our analysis of the work by the Airports Commission which will provide the basis of the Government’s decision on a new runway. We highlighted the climate gaps in the argument for a new runway, we raised concerns about the limitations of the Airports Commission conclusion about the air quality impacts of a new runway, and we brought to light the negative net economic impacts of a new runway.
