ICAO fails to meet the challenge of climate change

8th October, 2007

ICAO finished its triennial meeting recently. As far as the environment is concerned, the meeting was an abject failure.

The meeting of ICAO (the International Civil Aviation Authority) was attended by AEF’s director, Tim Johnson, who represents NGOs around the world.

ICAO has consistently failed to address the challenge of aviation and climate over the years and this meeting did nothing to rise to that challenge or provide international leadership. All it did is come up with a list of possible actions member states might consider adopting.

This lack of direction and leadership means that Europe remains set on introducing its Emissions Trading System (ETS). Meanwhile, the rest of the world, ‘led’ by the US, is seeking to challenge it legally while doing nothing else significant to address climate change.
