Environmental organisations urge EU to resist pressure from US aviation industry over carbon emissions

5th July, 2011

Leading environmental organisations will make their case at the European Court of Justice today (5 July) emphasising that all airlines should be included in the EU Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS).

WWF-UK, the Aviation Environment Federation (AEF), the European Federation for Transport and Environment (T&E), the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF), and Earthjustice will give evidence to support the UK Government and EU Member States in a case against the Air Transport Association of America (ATA) who are questioning the legality of including non-European Union (EU) airlines within the ETS .

The five EU and US NGOs are urging policymakers to resist pressure from the ATA and leading US airlines to undermine the scheme. The EU move to include aviation in the ETS is the only multi-country scheme that now exists to reduce aviation emissions, which are doubling every decade.
