Government must resist industry pressure on taxation

31st July, 2009

In April this year we reported on the 2009 budget. While it announced that air passenger duty was to rise, accompanying documents showed that these modest increases in taxation would not be enough to prevent aviation emissions from continuing to grow.

Now, four months away from implementation of the new tax rates, some loud voices in the airline industry have launched a lobbying effort to have the increases abolished.

To read the response from AEF, alongside other leading environmental NGOs, see our letter in the Daily Telegraph (or read it online) and our letter to the Chancellor, Alistair Darling.

For more information, see our news story on the Pre-Budget Report 2008, outlining the proposed tax rises but abandoning plans for a per-plane tax, and our reporting of the Budget in April 2009.
